Are you a for-profit or a non-profit?

L. is a for-profit company with a core mission of creating sustainable social impact. Our model allows us to partner with grassroots non-profits to distribute condoms where they are needed most while giving consumers the option to do good in their day to day lives.

Do you work with other organizations to fulfill 1:1?

Yes – key to making one for one possible are our partnerships with nonprofit orginizations. L. has been given the privilege to work with Direct Relief International, which has over 60 years experience in providing medical assistance throughout the world. We are also cultivating partnerships with smaller grassroots non-profits focused on women’s empowerment, AIDS prevention and education. If your organization is interested in partnering with L., please contact us.

Why women?

You think condom, you think sex. You may think protection and sexual empowerment. L. supports all of these ideas. But there’s more to it. Increasingly, women are the face of AIDS in Africa as they are disproportionately affected at a young age. Females between the ages of 15-24 are two times more likely to be living with HIV then males. Condom usage can stop the cycle of HIV transmission that too often leaves women isolated from their families and communities. Condoms also provide women with better quality of life – a simple yet effective birth control that allows women to practice birth spacing, which directly reduces rates of infant and maternal mortality. It also frees up time and resources to raise a happy and healthy family and to pursue education and career ambitions. At L., we see women as powerful agents of change and development. It is part of the reason we support women leaders in Africa who will assist us in fulfilling our one for one mission. A largely untapped resource in Africa, women have the unique ability to organize peer-to-peer networks and innovative outreach programs as well as the skills to strengthen and lead the global AIDS crisis.

How are L. brand condoms manufactured?

L. condoms are manufactured according to FDA standards, ensuring that quality and safety are of the utmost concerns.

A quality control team monitors every step of the manufacturing process.

Quality Control specialists take samples of raw latex and test them based on strict specifications. Once the vulcanizing process is finished, they conduct tests again. See Step #1 for details about the vulcanizing process.

Quality Control technicians then monitor and collect condom samples hourly during the dripping process. The samples are carefully recorded with lot numbers and undergo a number of tests in the lab. Should any samples from any batch prove to be below standards, they are to be rejected and destroyed.

Condoms are then dried, coated with a non-stick agent, tested for any potential air burst break, for volume properties, and for any leakage. Only those lots that pass all required testing can be processed further. Lots that fail any test are rejected and destroyed.

Once the electronic testing process is complete, the condoms are ready for final testing and Quality Control acceptance. All lots undergo tests to ensure air burst pressure and volume meet standards, proper seal on the foil exists, and that all labeling, expiration dating and lubricant weights and type are correct. Those lots that pass all of these requirements are the only lots released for sale by Quality Control. Remaining lots are destroyed.

Below is a brief description of how L. condoms are made for you.

Step #1: Vulcanization to build strength

Vulcanization is the process to compound raw latex, providing the latex strength and elasticity. The liquid latex compound is then stored in stainless steel tanks.

Step #2: Dip and formation

Clean glass molds are dipped into the latex bath and then cured in an oven at 175 º Fahrenheit. The glass molds are then given a hot-water bath. Condoms are removed from the molds by rotating brushes.

Step #3: Drying

The condoms are then dried in batches in large dryers for two hours.

Step #4: Electronic testing

Electronic testing machines ensure that every L. condom is up to rigorous standards. Each condom goes into a water solution charged with an electric current. If a current passes through a condom, there is a hole in the condom and that condom is thrown away.

Step #5: Foiled

Only the condoms that successfully pass the electronic testing are individually sealed in foils, tagged with a lot number and expiration date.
